Wales v Andorra preview: Party time in Cardiff

Gareth Bale (second right) and his Wales team-mates celebrate after qualifying in Bosnia There will be a party atmosphere in Cardiff on Tuesday night as Wales host Andorra with their qualification to Euro 2016 assured. Chris Coleman's side secured their place in the finals of the major tournament for the first time in 58 years on Saturday night in Bosnia and they will have the freedom to express themselves against Andorra, who are bottom of Group B. A 2-0 defeat mattered little in the end for Coleman's men, who made it to Euro 2016 courtesy of Israel's loss against Cyprus.Wales' rapid rise seemed a world away at the start of this campaign when they needed a Gareth Bale free-kick late-on to squirm past Andorra 2-1 in the reverse fixture. From there, they have never looked back, recording famous wins against Belgium and away in Israel. End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

That 2-1 defeat set the tone for the Andorrans as they have lost every game in this qualification period, conceding 34 goals along the way.Team news Coleman says he will make a few changes for this game after the emotional and physical energy spent in Saturday's 2-0 defeat in Bosnia. But Bale, who has scored six goals in this campaign, is set to start after coming through his first 90 minutes since suffering a calf injury playing for Real Madrid last month. Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Joe Ledley and Ashley Williams are expected to keep their places.

Thierry Henry on Arsenal's 'massive' north London derby win in Capital One Cup

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had endured a tough week after defeats at Dinamo Zagreb and Chelsea He told Sky Sports: "It is massive. Huge. Let's fast forward a bit. You don't want to go to Leicester having lost that game. "They won the derby, and you saw how they played. They fought well, they had character, it wasn't just flamboyant Arsenal. And they won at the Lane. "They're going to be buzzing, there will be happiness around the dressing room and the training ground, and that's always better for them to prepare for the next game." But after Manchester City's 2-1 defeat by West Ham on Saturday, Henry insists the unpredictability of the Premier League gives Arsene Wenger's side hope of challenging for the title. He said: "I would have been more worried if Man City had won against West Ham, but they didn't. It gives a little hope after the loss against Chelsea.

Liverpool booing rare for Anfield, says John Aldridge

John Aldridge says Liverpool supporters are not used to the chorus of booing heard recently at Anfield as the pressure increases on manager Brendan Rodgers. On Wednesday the Reds scraped through the third round of the Capital One Cup at home to Carlisle on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Rodgers' side are also 13th in the Premier League having gone four games without a win after starting with back-to-back victories.Unfortunately the last couple of games, against Norwich and last night at half-time and full-time, there was a very small section but it is something that we are not used to at Anfield." Aldridge, who scored 63 goals in 104 appearances for Liverpool, said it comes with the territory that the manager receives criticism when results are negative.

Norwich midfielder Gary O’Neil delighted by form of new boy Matt Jarvis

Gary O’Neil believes Matt Jarvis has given Norwich a new attacking dimension and has backed the winger to build on his promising start. The 29-year-old joined the Canaries on a season-long loan from Premier League rivals West Ham on deadline day and has enjoyed a fine beginning to his time at Carrow Road. Jarvis netted on his debut in Norwich's 3-1 victory over Bournemouth earlier this month and doubled his goal tally for the club in Wednesday's 3-0 Capital One Cup win against West Bromwich Albion. PREMIER LEAGUE - 26th Sep West HamvNorwich West Ham5/4 Norwich21/10 Draw12/5 FulhamvQPR Charlie Austin to Score and QPR to Win in 90 Mins4/1 Bet nowBet £5 get £20 free As part of his loan agreement, Jarvis will be unavailable for Norwich's trip to Upton Park to face the Hammers on Saturday. Though Jarvis will be missing for the clash against his parent club, O'Neil is feeling optimistic over the prospect of having the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man alongside him in the midfield. "He's done great," said O'Neil, who also played in the same midfield as Jarvis at West Ham. "It's good to have someone like that in your team because you can just give it to him and let him do it on his own for a little while. "Whereas maybe before when we played all of our midfielders we were always having to pass it, we all wanted to pass it, we didn't really have people that would drive. "He gives you a bit of a break when you can get it to him and get him to run 40 yards up the pitch. "His crossing's always been fantastic. He hasn't been renowned for getting loads of goals, but when you're the type of winger he is he's generally out wide, so he's not going to be in position to score that often. "He even scored with his left foot (against West Brom). Make a note of that because I don't think that'll happen too often. "He's very good, he's an out-and-out winger, he's an old-fashioned winger, he'll face the full-back up and test him all night long."

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett reckons Aston Villa counterpart Tim Sherwood is in a tough position

Birmingham manager Gary Rowett believes Aston Villa counterpart Tim Sherwood has taken on a difficult task. The former Tottenham boss arrived at Villa in February and steered the club away from the relegation zone to secure another season of Premier League football, and also guide the team to the FA Cup final, when they were beaten by Arsenal in May. Since that trip to Wembley, Villa have lost two of their most influential players, with Fabian Delph's sale to Manchester City and Christian Benteke's move to Liverpool. Villa were jeered off the pitch at the end of their 1-0 reverse to Midlands rivals West Brom on Saturday, a result which leaves them sitting fourth from bottom in the Premier League. "I watched his team when he took over at Tottenham, I thought he did a very, very good job there, his win ratio was excellent," Rowett said. "And I think we all have to understand that also coming to Villa at the moment is not an easy job, it's a difficult job. "I think losing some of the players that they lost in the summer makes that job doubly-hard. Any side that loses Benteke and Fabian Delph, regardless of how they've left, it's going to be a difficult job to take on. "So I've got full respect for that and wish Tim all the best, obviously in this game we've got to concentrate on what we do and see if we can get a result for our fans."

Anthony Martial: Man Utd striker 'magnificent', says Keown

Martial became the most expensive teenager ever when he moved to Old Trafford, and the signing was was met with surprise by some commentators in the media. Already an established France Under-21 international, he had just been called up to the senior national team when he joined Louis van Gaal's side at the beginning of September. And with team-mate Wayne Rooney having yet to score in the league this season, Martial has already proved vital to United. "I thought they would take him off at 3-1 and they do need to manage him well. He's only a young boy really," said Keown. "But he looks very powerful and mature and he's well beyond the age he played at on Sunday." End of Season discount soccer shoes , please click

Mauricio Pochettino insists Spurs squad can cope with schedule

We have a lot of games ahead and we need to be careful with the players," he said. "We need to give the players time to recover and manage them in a very good way because we have some problems with some players. But we have a big squad, it is not a problem." Pochettino accepts Spurs will face a much-improved Palace side this weekend. "Palace have improved in different positions and showed it in the last nine or 10 games - they have won eight. "They are a very strong team and have improved a lot from last season. They showed signs of what they are capable of when Alan Pardew took over. "This season they've really kicked on - it will be a tough test. They've got a bit of everything now because they are organised, they defend well but then they also have good attacking players with flair and creativity.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez praised his sides performance in 0-0 draw at Swansea

Roberto Martinez praised his players’ ‘terrific’ performance as Everton drew 0-0 with Swansea at The Liberty Stadium Everton manager Roberto Martinez was delighted with the performance of his players as they dominated Swansea in a goalless draw at the Liberty Stadium. The Blues created numerous chances to win the game in the second half but a combination of excellent last-ditch defending from Swansea and wayward finishing from the visitors meant the game ended in stalemate. However, Martinez was full of praise for the way his team went about their business in south Wales.

La Liga round-up: Fernando Torres helps Atletico ease past Eibar

Substitute Angel Correa made the breakthrough in a hard-fought 2-0 victory for Atletico Madrid away to Eibar, while Real Sociedad's miserable season continued. Diego Simeone's side had made little impact against a determined Eibar defence, but the introduction of Correa and Fernando Torres in the second half changed the game. Torres set up Correa for the opener after 62 minutes and then the Argentine youngster was the supplier for Torres, who dinked the ball over 'keeper Asier Riesgo for the second after 78 minutes.Real Madrid, who beat Granada, have 10 points from four games and are a point ahead of Atletico and champions Barcelona, who have won their opening three matches and face Levante at home on Sunday. In the late game, A stoppage-time goal from Hernan Perez saw Espanyol sneak past 10-man Real Sociedad 3-2 for their second win of the season. In an enthralling encounter, Sociedad led after 19 minutes through Imanol Agirretxe before Gerard Moreno levelled from the penalty spot moments after goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli had been sent off. Espanyol then went ahead thanks to Enzo Roco's 71st-minute strike but Jonathas looked to have secured a point for the home side with his equaliser four minutes from time. However, there was late drama to come as Roco supplied the ball which was finished by Perez in the final minute, snatching a win for Espanyol which banished memories of last weekend's 6-0 hammering to Real Madrid. Defeat for Sociedad means David Moyes' side have yet to win in the league this season.

Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal: Handshakes, handbags

Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both sent off for Arsenal as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in which both sides reached their respective peaks. Centre-half Gabriel fell victim to Diego Costa’s latest rendition of sh*thousery, in which the Spaniard was seen flailing his arms in the face of Laurent Koscielny before pushing the Frenchman to the floor with his chest. Costa’s misdemeanors caught the attention of Koscielny’s team-mate, and after the pair were booked for their parts in the ensuing row, Gabriel was then shown a straight red card after kicking out at the striker seconds later. It ignited a lifeless game between the two sides in which neither truly tested the opposition, with Asmir Begovic and Petr Cech saving tame attempts in the opening 45 minutes from Theo Walcott and Pedro respectively. With Francis Coquelin hauled off at the break to make way for Calum Chambers, the hosts started to grasp the initiative, and it was defender Kurt Zouma who scored his first ever Premier League goal from a Cesc Fabregas free-kick which broke the deadlock after 53 minutes. Alexis Sanchez has a half-chance to equalise on the hour mark after defensive confusion between Zouma and Gary Cahill allowed the Chilean in, but he miscued his finish under pressure from Begovic. Sanchez had a relatively subdued game up against under-fire Branislav Ivanovic, who bizarrely was not only not dropped but started as captain after John Terry was benched by Jose Mourinho. As Arsenal laboured to create any meaningful opportunity when both a goal and a man down, Mourinho did what Mourinho does by replacing Oscar with Ramires after 70 minutes, thereby shutting up shop with a 1-0 lead at home against 10 men. Arsene Wenger responded by taking off the disappointing Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, bringing on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Olivier Giroud in their wake. The changes hardly had the desired effect however, as Santi Cazorla was sent off for a second bookable offence just minutes later, with a heavily-deflected Eden Hazard strike in stoppage time handing Chelsea their first home Premier League win of the season. John Obi Mikel was then brought on in stoppage time as Mourinho managed to lift a second finger to form a ‘V’ in the direction of Wenger.

Arsene Wenger calls for perspective and backs Arsenal despite West Ham defeat

Arsene Wenger says there is no reason Arsenal's opening-day defeat should stop them having "a strong season". West Ham's 2-0 win at the Emirates pricked the optimism of a flawless pre-season capped by victory over champions Chelsea in the Community Shield. But ahead of this weekend's Super Sunday trip to Crystal Palace, Wenger has called for "perspective" and challenged his side to respond at Selhurst Park. Cuadrado Can Still Star For Chelsea

Cuadrado Can Come Good Juan Cuadrado has not been great for Chelsea so far. This is undeniable. But before being declared one of the worst Chelsea players ever (after 6 months?! Really?), maybe its time to take a step back and look at what the situation was like when he joined. Cuadrado joined at the end of January, at a time when the whole team was becoming more functional after a mesmerizing first half of the season. The scope for experimentation was reduced as many of the key players of the first half of the season were performing at around 60-70% of their capacity (probably even less in the cases of Oscar and Fabregas) and the defense was key in the second half of the season. It was always unlikely that Cuadrado would become a key player in such a situation as the demands of the Premier League are so much greater than those of Serie A. There is such a vast difference in the pace of the game in the two leagues that there is bound to be a period of adjustment (to emphasize this point, just look at how brilliant Salah was at Fiorentina compared to how ineffective he was at Chelsea). Mourinho himself does not like taking too many risks and favours a certain style of play which does take some getting used to as Hazard himself found out. Cuadrado was one of the best players at the World Cup and by all accounts was pretty good at the Copa America as well. He is fast and flexible and can change direction quickly. He needs to bulk up a bit like Hazard and I don't see why he cannot have an impact this season. But yeah, this season is a big one for him as its do or die now. A little while ago, someone in the mailbox questioned why Mourinho was not getting as much criticism for Cuadrado as Van Gaal was getting for Di Maria. The main reason for that is that Di Maria was actually brilliant when he joined. He was regularly scoring and assisting in the first few months of the season. He had been a key part of a Champions league winning team, playing a decisive role in the final. He had been a key part of a world cup finalist. Then Van Gaal began shifting him around. He tried to make ADM play like Robben at the World Cup, a job he was unsuited to and then randomly seemed to move him where he felt like. Can you blame Di Maria for underperforming when each role would probably have new responsibilities and would take time to get use to? Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby agrees Marseille deal

He was offered the chance to stay in the Premier League with West Brom but turned down a move to The Hawthorns. Instead he will be heading back to France after playing only two games in the last two seasons for Arsenal. "Olympique de Marseille and Abou Diaby have this Tuesday evening reached an agreement in principle for the international midfielder to join the club," Marseille said on their website. The 29-year-old joined Arsenal from French club Auxerre in 2006 but his last match for the Gunners was September 2014. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he has "enormous respect" for Diaby but added: "Each time he came back, we had to start again from zero because of another injury. "He is not a player who is fragile but just a victim of a violent tackle which went unpunished."

Whatever Happened To Reserving Judgment?

Had online football journalism 'developed' to 2015 proportions in 2003, there would have been articles with titles like 'Past It: How Twitter reacted to Makelele move', 'Chelsea sign 'average' troublemaker Makelele' and 'Ten Other Over-Priced and Over-The-Hill Signings'. Claude Makelele was 30, he cost £16m and he had gone on strike to force through a move to Chelsea that he later admitted was almost entirely about money. That was the summer that Chelsea spent over £111m, including £17m on Damien Duff, £15m on Juan Sebastian Veron, £15.8m on Adrian Mutu, £9.8m on Scott Parker and £16.8m on Hernan Crespo; Makelele was the last in the door and fans of other clubs laughed at the ridiculousness of spending so much money on a 30-year-old. Chelsea fans were mildly embarrassed; they were yet to develop the thick blue skin of the nouveau riche. The words of Real president Florentino Perez - "We will not miss Makélelé. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and 90% of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways. He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makélelé to be forgotten" - were particularly damning. They would have picked up rather more traction in 2015. Both the F365 Mailbox and my own involvement with Football365 date back to before 2003 and I remember widespread cynicism at this summer of scattergun spending by Chelsea, with particular criticism for the signings of Veron, Crespo and Makelele, who were said to have struggled at bigger clubs and were clearly only lured to Stamford Bridge by the new influx of petrodollars. While the other two players were - at best - qualified successes, Makelele was a revelation. In a different era, an awful lot of spitefully favourited 'what a waste of money' tweets would have been re-tweeted.

"Thanks to the president and Monchi who helped me come here," he added. "I'd like to be a few years at Sevilla, I hope to find a family in this team." Immobile has been drafted into Unai Emery's squad following the departure of prolific forward Carlos Bacca, who joined AC Milan earlier this month. Emery guided Sevilla to a fifth-placed Primera Division finish last season and the Andalusian club sealed a record fourth Europa League crown when they beat Dnipro in May's final.

Hugo Lloris doubtful for start of new season after injury

Hugo Lloris could miss the start of Tottenham's season after fracturing his wrist. The France goalkeeper faces a race against time to be ready for Spurs' Premier League opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 8. Lloris, who has been linked with a move to United in newspaper reports over the summer, looks set to miss the pre-season games against the MLS All-Stars and the Audi Cup in Germany, where Spurs face Real Madrid and either AC Milan or Bayern Munich.. The 28-year-old returned to pre-season training on Monday, having suffered the injury over the summer and after tests the extent of the injury has been confirmed. A statement on Tottenham's website read: "The club can confirm that Hugo Lloris has sustained a fractured wrist during the close season period. "The France goalkeeper will continue to work alongside the first-team squad to build up his fitness in a bid to be ready for the start of the season. "Our medical team will continue to monitor his rehabilitation and progress during pre-season." Lloris' injury, coupled with the retirement of Brad Friedel, means Michel Vorm is the only senior goalkeeper at the club and youngster Luke McGee is likely to be given his chance in pre-season to stake his claim for a regular place in the first team squad.

Women's World Cup: England success leaves WSL legacy

England women became the country's most successful football team in half a century, captured the imagination of a nation on the way to World Cup bronze and attracted unprecedented attention along the way. Coach Mark Sampson labelled his team "legends", while the Football Association welcomed them back as "poster girls" for the game - but what legacy was cast in Canada? In south-west London, AFC Wimbledon Ladies have added three more girls teams, at Wembley they are encouraging more dads to back their daughters on the football pitch and across the country clubs are anticipating bigger crowds. So as the players shift their attention back to club duties in the Women's Super League, where you can buy a ticket to watch Liverpool Ladies for the same amount of money that you would spend on a cup of tea at Anfield, BBC Sport looks at how the World Cup will impact on women's football in England. Dads, daughters and dugouts The latest numbers show that fathers would sooner put a tennis racquet in their daughter's hand and will them to play at Wimbledon than have them lace up a pair of football boots and dream of Wembley. England and Notts County defender Sophie Bradley, who was taken out of World Cup contention with a knee injury, faced that very battle as a young girl trying to convince her father Russell that it was not just a "boy's world". While the Lionesses were on the way to winning World Cup bronze in Canada, the FA was busy trying capitalise on the record exposure by launching a We Can Play campaign. The aim is to entice more players to try the game, to change preconceptions and recruit an army of dads as supporters in an effort to make women's football the second most popular team sport in Britain behind men's football by 2018.

David Silva happy with Manuel Pellegrini

David Silva is happy that Manchester City have kept faith with Manuel Pellegrini as they step up their preparations for the new season. City, who head to Australia on pre-season duty next week, failed to retain their Premier League title last season after Pellegrini had claimed a league and cup double in his first year in charge. Pellegrini came under mounting pressure last season but come August, he will be in the dug-out for his third season in charge and that is good news as far as Silva is concerned. The City playmaker told Sky Sports News HQ: "He's been our coach for two years and he is a coach who likes to play attacking football so for the attacking players it is very good and we want to keep playing that way." City will face Chelsea in the second weekend of the season live on Sky Sports and Silva believes that that match will present a good chance to put down an early marker in the title race. He said: "Every year it is very difficult as there are very good teams, the competition is hard, every game is high level and we just try to do our best. "We want to make a good start and then to take that advantage, get the minds prepared and to get ready for it."

Stoke City lining up Shay Given move as Middlesbrough await news

Stoke City are preparing a late move to trump Middlesbrough and sign veteran goalkeeper Shay Given, Sky sources understand. The Republic of Ireland international is set to be released from the final year of his contract at Aston Villa and it seemed likely that he would rejoin a Middlesbrough side where he spent three months on loan during the 2013-14 season. Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka said: "Shay was here, I know him, he knows me, so we are working to do the deal. Let's see."

Here, we look at how Alderweireld’s move to Spurs happened – and how Southampton missed out… Southampton sign Alderweireld on season-long loan from Atletico Alderweireld joined Southampton on a season-long loan in September 2014. The 25-year-old had struggled to pin down a starting spot during Atletico Madrid’s title-winning 2013/14 campaign, making just 12 appearances after a 2013 switch from Ajax. The promise of first-team football at St Mary’s, following the departure of Dejan Lovren to Liverpool, attracted the Belgian. Arda Turan: All you need to know about the reported Manchester United and Liverpool target

His intention is to leave Spain this summer,” Bulut told Spanish newspaper AS. “His desire is to leave and to play in the Premier League, that is the path he would like to take to continue his career. We are currently in talks with three teams but I cannot reveal the names of the clubs. However, I can tell you that they are the best in England and in European football.” The British press have linked Manchester United, City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal with Turan in recent years, and Bulut claims the 28-year-old is also wanted by Italian giants AC Milan and French side Paris St Germain. “It’s true that Milan and PSG are two of the six teams that are interested in him,” added Bulut. “But the Italian team is not among our options because they will not play in the Champions League next season. PSG is a possibility although Arda always has the desire to play in England.” What’s his background? Turan, a Turkish international with over 80 international caps, first rose to prominence at Galatasaray. He made his debut as a teenager in 2005 and became a key player the following season. He was named Galatasaray captain at the age of just 21, and after making close to 200 appearances for his boyhood club, he was snapped up by Atletico for 12million euros in 2011. The fee made him the most expensive Turkish player in history, and he has been worth every penny for Atletico. Turan has become a key player for Diego Simeone’s side, making over 40 appearances in each of his four seasons at the club and playing a key role in their recent La Liga, Europa League and Copa del Rey successes. Turan is not prolific – he has averaged 4.5 league goals per season since 2011 – but he has weighed in with some crucial strikes in the last two seasons. The playmaker was injured for their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in 2014, but he scored against Zenit St Petersburg, Porto and Chelsea earlier in the campaign. Last season, he netted Atletico’s winner as they triumphed 2-1 at the Bernabeu in September, and he was also on target in a 1-0 win over Juventus. What are his strengths? As well as having a tendency to pop up with crucial goals, Turan is intelligent in possession with accurate distribution that is usually at the heart of Atletico’s attacking play. His La Liga pass completion rate of 85.2 per cent was by far the highest of anyone at the club in 2014/15, and he has also averaged 5.25 assists per season in league and European games since 2011. Arda Turan demonstrates his dribbling abilities against Valencia Arda Turan demonstrates his dribbling abilities against Valencia Turan possesses great vision, excellent technique and impressive dribbling abilities, and he also has the versatility to play anywhere across the midfield. The 28-year-old was primarily used on the right wing throughout 2014/15, but he has previously featured more prominently in the centre.

England U21s reality check following European Championship exit

England were eliminated from the European Under-21 Championship following a 3-1 defeat to Italy that saw Gareth Southgate’s side finish bottom of Group B. Adam Bate was in Olomouc for Sky Sports to witness England’s latest tournament disappointment… Perhaps we should have taken the hint in the build-up to England’s crunch clash with Italy when Gareth Southgate began listing the experience his players had of big occasions and referenced a Championship play-off semi-final. For when the moment came for England to produce a flawless performance under pressure, his young players just didn’t have it within them to cope. Instead, familiar failings were exposed, defensive errors punished and efforts undermined. “There’s nothing between the eight teams in my opinion,” maintained Southgate after seeing his side concede twice in quick succession before the break en route to a 3-1 defeat and tournament elimination. “It then comes down to detail and concentration. “The two minute spell in the first half where we conceded two was the turning point of the game. It’s cruel but that’s the nature of football and because of the way we performed in both penalty boxes we are out.” Gareth Southgate blamed a costly two minutes for defeat to Italy Gareth Southgate blamed a costly two minutes for defeat to Italy And so, the recriminations begin and the game of England tournament bingo gets underway. Expect money, foreigners and the grassroots of the game to get early mentions. It’s a full-blown autopsy now and there are plenty of bones to choose from. But Southgate was understandably keen to focus on this group of players in the immediate aftermath. “We can’t put these young players in with everything else that has happened in England’s football history,” he said. “These are young players. “They were punished ruthlessly. Football is take your chances and make sure you keep your concentration at the other end. There is some improvement that needs to happen in terms of their general defending but that’s the stage they are at.” Marco Benassi doubled Italy's lead while Nathan Redmond could only watch on Marco Benassi doubled Italy's lead while Nathan Redmond could only watch on It’s the discovery of the exact stage they are at that has been so disappointing, not least for the players themselves. The optimism had been understandable given that England were second-highest scorers in qualifying with the best defensive record. The 2014/15 campaign had also brought friendly wins over tournament favourites Germany, hosts Czech Republic and group rivals Portugal. Hope seemed justified even with the contentious absence of stars such as Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley. But the goals of Harry Kane and Saido Berahino that had fired England through qualifying masked a softer underbelly that was exposed once the latter was injured, leaving the former to shoulder the burden. Others did not share that pedigree. Football365's Top Ten Summer Needs

0) Everton - Satisfactory reserve options There's a good deal to like about Everton's first-choice XI. Leighton Baines, James McCarthy, Seamus Coleman, John Stones, Phil Jagielka, Muhamed Besic and Romelu Lukaku may all merit starts at neighbours Liverpool, for example. What lets Roberto Martinez down is the bare cupboard left once the finest ingredients are removed. Tony Hibbert as the reserve right-back, Aroune Kone as the back-up for Lukaku and Antonin Alcaraz (now gone) in central defence - these are all things that require significant upgrade if Everton are going to improve. Last summer the majority of the transfer budget was spent on one striker, but this year Everton must spread their cash more thinly across the squad. The crucial trick is to do so without simply replacing mediocrity with mediocrity. Apropros of exactly that, Tom Cleverley has already arrived. 9) Newcastle United - Wingers Sammy Ameobi? No. Yoan Gouffran? No. Gabriel Obertan? No. Jonas Gutierrez? Gone. Sylvain Marveaux? No. Romain Amalfitano? No. Rolando Aarons? Yes, but still very raw. Any Newcastle supporter will give you a list as long as their arm for how Steve McClaren (and Mike Ashley) must improve this stagnant squad, but it is in wide areas that they are most lacking. Papis Cisse's chance conversion was remarkable last season, but both him and Ayoze Perez were forced to feed on relative scraps. As a rule, Newcastle's crossing and set-piece taking is at primary school level. With Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella and Moussa Sissoko all capable of creating behind the striker, signing a wide player (or two) would do much to lift the mood on Tyneside. Newcastle fans have a long history of adoring a winger (think Ruel Fox, David Ginola, Laurent Robert, Nobby Solano and Hatem Ben Arfa). All they want is someone to make them dream. 8) Promoted clubs - Defenders It is the one constant of the Premier League era. In every single season, the team that has conceded the most goals has been relegated. Sunderland and Aston Villa survived in May despite only scoring 31 times all season, compared to QPR's 42 (a total higher than six other teams). Letting them in at a rate of almost two a game is the perfect recipe for relegation.

Our Relationship With England Is Broken...

I wonder how we would view an England game if we didn't know it was England playing. Would we enjoy the football more? Would we be less critical? Would we see the good in this team more clearly? I suspect we'd think we were not bad at all. I think we'd like us a whole lot more if we didn't know we were England because we're quite messed up about the national side. Isn't it odd? I think most of us are a bit weary of watching England games, especially at this time of year when it feels very much like the party has ended and all that remains are fag burns on the carpet and stained underwear in one of the bedrooms. The qualifying process for each tournament in the last dozen or so years is usually conducted in a strange atmosphere where England win almost every game but leave behind a feeling that they're not very good. We almost never lose any games at this stage - Steve McClaren's inglorious reign aside - and we often win quite well. But even today, with six wins out of six under our belt, do we feel good about England? No, we don't. We feel a bit grumpy and sour and a lot of things annoy us. Most of the players seem a bit rubbish and we don't have any great alternatives. It must be hard for Roy Hodgson. What more do we want than a 100% win ratio? When you have such a successful campaign, he's every right to think the fans will be behind the side, but we're not really. Not whole-heartedly. He was charged with transforming an ageing side and he did that, only to see a youngish side given a kicking in the World Cup. He stayed on against many people's wishes and has delivered a side that is a winning machine. He's only lost five games in charge of England. But somehow we all know it's papering over the cracks. Or that's what it seems like. The endless failures, both in terms of performances and results in tournaments, has beaten any faith in England out of us, no matter how well they win in qualifying.
