Gregory Mertens' condition deteriorates after heart problem

The condition of Belgian defender Gregory Mertens has deteriorated following his collapse on the pitch with a heart-related illness.

The 24-year-old Lokeren player is in a critical condition after being given CPR in the first half of Monday's reserve-team game with Genk.

He is in an induced coma in a Genk hospital on a life support machine.

"His situation has deteriorated. We are waiting for the worst news to come," a Lokeren spokesman said.

The Jupiler Pro League club say that the exact nature of Mertens' heart condition has yet to be established.

They added that Mertens passed all the pre-season health tests required by Europe's football governing body Uefa and was judged to be one of the fittest players at the club.

A former Belgium Under-21 international, Mertens joined Lokeren in the summer from Cercle Brugge and has played in 15 league games this term, as well as against Hull City in the Europa League in August.

Monday's game was postponed while Mertens was being treated.

Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, both Belgium internationals, have tweeted their support for Mertens, saying: "Keep fighting Gregory".

And the former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne tweeted: "Incredibly bad news. Keep fighting Gregory."

“In the hotel, away or at home. If we have to wait till the final day against Sunderland, we will wait.” Mourinho has said this a couple of times now. Not winning against Arsenal means they cannot win it at Leicester in front of the Sky cameras on Wednesday, though the Chelsea manager would not have taken this for granted anyway.

Nigel Pearson’s side have suddenly won four on the spin to climb out of the bottom three having spent five months rooted to the bottom.

And anyway, it’s the competitiveness of the Premier League that makes Mourinho love it so much.

The first time I ever interviewed him was after his second game back at Stamford Bridge following his stint with Real Madrid.

It was also a Wednesday night match, also against a team that was a big underdog. Chelsea beat Aston Villa 2-1 that evening but barely deserved it.

Despite that, Mourinho couldn’t stop smiling in his interview afterwards. And that’s because it’s matches like that one - and like facing Leicester at the King Power - that make this league so special to him.

“I missed that about the Premier League," he said after that game against Villa in August 2013. "In the Bernebeu, we win every match and normally very comfortably. This (in the Premier League) is what I like.”

Fight

This Leicester team won’t disappoint him. The day after the Arsenal v Chelsea game I went up to the stadium to interview Marc Albrighton, David Nugent and captain Wes Morgan for a feature that will air in the 45 minute build-up to Wednesday’s game.

The desperation to keep the team up and retain their status as Premier League footballers was apparent in each of them.

“I had to prove to people I was good enough for this league, ” said Nugent, after struggling with Portsmouth in his first crack at the big time.

Morgan has waited a decade - with Nottingham Forest and Leicester - for a chance in the top division.

Albrighton, who has finally nailed down a place in the Leicester team during the recent run, spoke of seasons at former club Aston Villa when he struggled to even make the bench.

“All I ever wanted to do was play football. I love it,” he said, revealing the type of enthusiasm with which Leicester will try to overwhelm Chelsea on Wednesday.

“It has been very tough. I had a season at Villa where I had to watch from the stands because I didn't even make the squad. Not being able to pull my kit on and get out on the pitch was horrible.”

Players who’ve had to fight this hard to achieve their Premier League dream don’t give up on it easily.

You sense, when Chelsea’s championship charge arrives at the King Power, Leicester will be ready for the fight. But Jose Mourinho won’t mind that. In fact, it will be very much to his taste.

Manchester City dominate richest young sports stars with six players in top 20

Manchester City have six players in the top 20 richest young sports stars in Britain and Ireland.

In a list of under-30s dominated by 14 footballers, only four of which are British or Irish, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Edin Dzeko, Samir Nasri, Vincent Kompany and James Milner boast a combined fortune of £110millon.

According to The Times’ Rich List 2015, Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney is officially the wealthiest footballer and worth £72m, second across all sports only to F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Two of City’s internationals, Aguero and Silva, come in at joint-sixth on the list, worth £26m each, before Chelsea and Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas in eighth place, owning £23m.

Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale sits ninth on the list, worth £21m, with on-loan Manchester United forward Radamel Falcao below him in 10th, with £20m.

Another City pair, Bosnia and Herzegovina striker Edin Dzeko and France’s Samir Nasri, come in at joint-12th, worth £17m, while England pair Theo Walcott and Ashley Young, of Arsenal and Manchester United respectively, are joint-14th and worth £13m each.

PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, James Milner and Mesut Ozil round off the top 20 and own £12m each.

The plethora of Manchester City players comes as little surprise, with the club second only to Manchester United in terms of their annual wage bill, spending over £200m a year.

Not a single female made the richest sportspeople list, and not a single female makes the richest young sportspeople top 20 either.

Torino came from behind to beat runaway leaders Juventus to secure their first Turin derby victory for 20 years.

Juve would have wrapped up a fourth consecutive title with a win, coupled with a Lazio defeat, and led when Andrea Pirlo curled home a free-kick.

Matteo Darmian levelled in style as he chipped the ball into the box with his first touch from a cross and lashed home with his second.

And Fabio Quagliarella tapped home against his old club for a famous win.

At least 10 Torino fans were injured in the first half when a paper banger exploded, causing splinters from seats to hit supporters.

Second-placed Lazio drew 1-1 with Chievo, meaning a Juventus win would not have secured the title anyway.

But for Juve, the game was about more than the title as their 17-match unbeaten run and seven-game winning streak in the derby came to an end.

And they almost rescued a point late on, just moments after Josef Martinez had a goal disallowed for Torino.

Alessandro Matri's cross hit the post and Simone Pepe was unable to turn in the rebound.

In injury time, Pirlo had a glorious chance to level but shinned his shot from 18 yards out, firing well over.

In Rome, Lazio led Chievo through Miroslav Klose but Alberto Paloschi levelled.

Lazio are one point above city rivals Roma in the battle for the final automatic Champions League spot.

Sixth-placed Fiorentina suffered a surprise 3-1 home defeat by Cagliari,who close the gap on safety to seven points.

The visitors, in Gianluca Festa's first game in charge, scored one of the goals of the season. Diego Farias ran from his own half, skipping past a defender with a backheel and then nutmegging another to fire home.

Elsewhere, Antonio Nocerino scored the only goal as bankrupt Parma,who are being funded by the league to complete their fixtures, beatPalermo 1-0 to delay their inevitable relegation by a few more days.

Europa League chasers Genoa beat Cesena 3-1, while 37-year-old Luca Toni scored twice as Verona beat Sassuolo 3-2.

German Denis scored an injury-time equaliser as lowly Atalanta drew 2-2 with Empoli.

There's A Sadness To Yaya's Meek Exit...

Cast your minds back, if you can, to 2014. Those were the days when everyone still thought Grant Shapps was a real person rather than an elaborate comic sketch by Robert Webb, Dion Dublin was merely a percussionist rather than a daytime TV presenter and the lindy hop was sweeping the nation.

Those were also the halcyon days when Yaya Toure could still at least do a decent impression of a magnificent footballer, still with that fearsome shot, appreciation of space and the ability to charge his way through a defence like a graceful, gliding bulldozer. Toure used to be about three different players in one, an extraordinary man who made taking off a forward in favour of a midfielder an attacking move, something that would set him loose on a collection of unsuspecting, trembling defenders who would be grateful if they escaped the experience merely with soiled knickers. Watching Toure, in his pomp and at full flight, was a little like watching Jonah Lomu trample over puny and insignificant opposition back in the 1995 World Cup, but with delicateness and skill and in a proper sport.

Those were the days when Toure - or, more accurately, his agent - could scare the living heck out of his club by hinting he wanted to do one, throwing some sort of concocted confectionery-based hissy fit, expecting everyone to believe that he genuinely was p**sed off about a bloody cake and not that this wasn't some hugely unsubtle attempt to drive a wedge betwixt club and player. Those were the days when Manchester City might actually have put up a significant fight to keep him.

Not so much now, one suspects. And the feeling would appear to be mutual.

"No amount of wages will make me stay at a club if I feel that I no longer belong there or if no challenge exists for me," Toure said this week, going on to not so much flirt with Paris St Germain and Inter as perform a recreation of that scene in Basic Instinct, only with Laurent Blanc or Roberto Mancini in place of Newman from Seinfeld. (Don't worry - that link doesn't feature anything that will make your work computer explode, just a picture proving that Newman from Seinfeld was in Basic Instinct. I know. Weird, right?)

The odd thing is that there won't be too many, beyond charming sentimentalists, who will cry themselves to sleep if and when Toure does depart, given how he's played this season. It used to be that City would look half the team without Toure, but even that has disappeared. This season they beat Bayern Munich and Roma without him, as well as thrashing Spurs and drawing with Chelsea, whereas Toure was involved in all of the defeats in their recent ruinous run of six defeats in eight games, bar the home game against Barcelona.

It's seemed at various stages this term as if he and Samir Nasri were having a competition to see how could look the least arsed about being footballers, half-heartedly shuffling around like men serving out their notice periods of jobs they can't wait to leave. They've all-but spent their time throwing bits of scrunched up paper into bins and stuffing pens and Post-It notes into their pockets, making endless cups of tea and flirting distractedly with the receptionist. Manuel Pellegrini has taken the brunt of the blame for City's lax performances in the second half of the season, and while it's true he doesn't exactly look like an inspirational figure who could convince his men to walk through fire, motivation is a two-way business. Players have to show some inclination to be motivated, and for long spells the City team, and Toure in particular, simply haven't.

Only Sergio Aguero can really have a case to be a more important player for City over the past few years, which makes it even sadder that Toure appears to be leaving the club with a shrug and a 'pffft', rather than something more fitting. A player of Toure's stature should have left City spectacularly, whether on the pitch or off it.

The spectacular departure can take a number of different forms, from the 'disgraceful' (Zinedine Zidane at the 2006 World Cup), to the successful (Peter Schmeichel's last game for Manchester United was the 1999 Champions League final), to the genuinely sad (Paul Gascoigne's last act for Spurs was to destroy his own knee), to the really quite splendidly odd (Kevin Keegan ended his spell as a player with Newcastle by hopping on a helicopter that had landed on the pitch, accompanied by fireworks.

All of them seem preferable to the whimper of a slunk departure; even the terrible injury, while obviously very bad news for the player, carries with it a certain slightly romantic sense of 'what if', of something tragically missed. That wouldn't really apply to Toure, and it goes without saying that we're not wishing a bad injury on the man. But he needs something.

Traditional glory isn't possible this season and the helicopter thing has been done, so that only really leaves one possible option - pointless, hilarious, Zidanesque violence. City's last game of the season is against Southampton, meaning Toure has the perfect opportunity to go out with a bang by calling Ronald Koeman a breaded ham-looking motherf***er, messing up Graziano Pelle's hair before turning on his own teammates, pushing Vincent Kompany over, pulling down Nasri's shorts and booting Pellegrini in the swingers. Now that would be a way to go out.

It's the only way, Yaya. It's got to be better than the meek exit, at least.

The stage was set for a local hero. It got one. But while Steven Gerrard will not mark his 35th birthday and final Liverpool appearance with an FA Cup final, Aston Villa's Jack Grealish will be returning to Wembley. It's no more than his performance deserved.

Grealish, the youngest player on the pitch, marked the occasion with a confident and mature display that was full of energy and quality. He'd been sent off in the quarter-final against West Brom, but this semi-final showing was emphatic justification of the trust Tim Sherwood had placed in him.

The contrast with Gerrard was stark with the older man unable to react to his perpetual movement. It was simple stuff. Collect the ball, pass it to a team-mate and move into space to receive it again. Grealish did that better than anyone all afternoon.

It was his measured ball to Fabian Delph in the build-up to Christian Benteke's goal that helped turn the tie in Villa's favour. Grealish made 33 passes in the first half - no Liverpool player managed more - finding a team-mate with 32 of them. It was the best passing accuracy of anyone on the pitch.

In the second half, there were opportunities as the game opened up and Grealish again seized the moment, finding Delph inside the area with a clever reverse pass for the England midfielder to score the winner. By the time he was substituted with eight minutes remaining, he'd earned a standing ovation and thunderous applause.

With socks barely covering his ankles and that Peaky Blinders haircut, he cuts a distinct figure. There's a swagger to Grealish that young fans can identify with and older ones will be happy to indulge given his obvious enthusiasm. You sense that Sherwood approves and not just because of the kiss that he planted on the youngster as he left the pitch.

"It's just his style," said the Villa boss recently. "If he performs how I think he can perform for this football club he can dress how he wants. It's not a fashion show. He is good and perhaps he knows he's good. You know what he said to me when I told him he was playing? He just said: 'About time!'

"He's not fazed. He knows the fabric of the club. He knows every turnstile at Villa Park. No one cares more than Jack Grealish. But it's not just about his heart and desire to keep this club in the league. It's also about his ability and what he carries. He's aware, he can open teams up, he can dribble past people, he's got a massive future at this football club."

Villa fans have had to be patient. They'd heard the whispers for a while of a boy from Solihull - one whose great-great-grandfather had won the FA Cup with the club no less - who could really play. Last season was spent on loan at Notts County with then boss Shaun Derry talking of how he'd been "unbelievably impressed" by a "special talent". But Paul Lambert was typically cautious, restricting the teenager to appearances off the bench.

Sherwood gave him his first Premier League start in the 3-3 draw against QPR earlier this month and a second followed in the 1-0 away win over Tottenham last time out. Grealish covered more ground per minute than any Villa player in both of those appearances. This was the athleticism - and ability - that was needed and the supporters have responded to it.

"He's absolutely loved here," added Sherwood. "When I first came in he was sitting on the bench, the fans were singing someone's name and I thought 'It's not mine - who are they chanting for?' But it was Jack they were calling for. For someone who's not really played that much, he's a star. I've seen him train - he has intensity.
